European schools for a living planet
Croatia
Croatia stretches from the Pannonian plains to the Mediterranean Sea and shows a great variety of landscapes. Plains, lakes and hills dominate in the north and northeast whereas the Dinaric arc in the centre shows densely wooded mountains, creeks and canyons. Two rivers of international importance run through the country: the Danube and Drava.
The Croatian Minister for Culture recently signed a decree for the preliminary protection of one of Europe’s most important river ecosystems: the wetlands of the Danube, Drava and Mura.  This area of about 150.000 hectares, or twice the size of Zagreb, represents the unique natural and cultural heritage of Croatia.
The capital of Croatia is Zagreb in the north east of the country. About 4.4 Million people live in Croatia, 780.000 of them in Zagreb.
