Celebration of the end of our project
We celebrated the end of our project on the 13 of May.
For our celebration we invited many friends and also other guests who are not indifferent about the environmental protection and who are very active in environmental awareness programs: Andreas Beckman, Deputy Director of WWF’s Danube-Carpathian programme,
Andriy Bilokon, WWF project coordinator of Earth Hour project
Kateryna Kurakina, communication manager for WWf Danube Delta project,
and famous singer– Sasha Koltcova (music band - Kryhitka Tcahes).
We arrange a welcome party to meet all our guests:
Our school folk choir "Pereveslo" performed beautiful music signing performance for us. And then we have showed our performance "We are not indifferent or the ecological footprint" for our guests and for our schoolmates who didn’t see our performance yet.
And specially for this occasion a sweet factory cooked a big cake in the
form of panda. We enjoyed it very much.
And we'll finish our meeting with a song "Ecology" written on music "Yesterday".

Month of the Earth - week III
III week of April:
Today we have completed collection of the used and old paper for recycling purposes. The event was announced among all students and their parents of our school and my common efforts we have collected
12,5 tons of paper!!!!!
If to use calculation that one ton of recycled paper saves about 7 trees, we have saved about 84 trees. It is almost like a good natural park.
It is one step forward the reduction of Environmental Footprint!!
The tradition of recycling paper should be part of the daily life and this idea should destributed among wide public.
Recycling 1 ton of paper saves about 70% of energy, 50% of clear water and about 7 trees. It is very economically effectiveand environmentally friendly way to produce new paper.
We wish everybody to think about he/she can reduce impact on the environment and save natural resources.

Month of the Earth - week 3
III week of April:
We celebrated the Earth Day on the 22 of April in the ZOO of our city Kiev. We showed our theatre performance for citizens, visitors and participants of the Earth Day.
It was very interesting and we hope that people were inspired to be more careful about their Footprint on the Earth.
Many children were among the visitors, so we think it was the most target audience for the education purposes.
The dress of our Earth - actor Oksana Zinchenko was especially beautiful this day. It was designed as a Earth flags from original flags performed for the Earth Day. It was rather quite symvolic.
And our polar bears could meet thier real relatives in the ZOO :-) and say them Hello!!
I think we enjoyed very much by this performance and by the excursion that we had in the ZOO after performance.
In the evening we were watching TV with day news were even was said about us :-). next day we want to find newspapers with photos!!

Exhibition "Ecochic - Sweden is on the way to the ecologically friendly fashion”.
Hi again!
One warm April Friday our female part of the team gathered to visit very interesting and unusual exhibition, that took place in Mohyla Academy Moderm Art Centre. It was a fashion clothes collection devoted to the Sweden project named “Ecochic - Sweden is on the way to the ecologically friendly fashion”. This exhibition represents clothes from 14 Sweden designers and fashion companies, which promote ecologically rational attitude to the fashion. We really had an excellent time there, were surprized about the facts and materials for making clothes used by these designers. We have also shared our thoughts and impression by writing comments in the wish'book. And due to this unusual topic we found somw facts and have the following ideas:
Under the attractive surface of our clothes the unattractive truth is hidden. However, the alternatives for our ecologically unfriendly clothes are existing. The Sweden University exhibition represents Swedish designers, who use ethical and environmentally friendly approach, in the same time without sacrificing to fashion.
Textile industry now pollutes the natural environment and reduces human lives. There are used more water than any other production. The air is polluted by the toxic chemical waste and large amount of carbon dioxide. Over a billion people works in textile and footwear industry. And the majority of them work in inhuman conditions, without the normal salary and trade union membership.
The distinctions between ecological and other clothes are not obvious. They are hidden in values, those are confessed and applied in productive process. Ecological and ethic cloth production starts from design and finishes ready product. The companies of fashion industry caring about the customers` trust must demonstrate the way production is going on as well as the materials used.
In 1987 the amount of resources of human use allows nature to renew. On 6th Oct 2007 we had already used annual renewable amount of resources and finished the year in ecologically dangerous zone. The fashion industry has lots of exceptional challenges on its developing way.
However, it is still possible to change our attitude to fashion and consumption. Sustainable and reasonable development is not a mere name and fashion concerns not only appearance.

I week of April: - Theatre performance and Pictures exhibition
We have succeeded in showing our performance “We are not indifferent –Environmental footprint” for adults, but also, as our program doesn’t have any strict age restrictions, we decided to acquaint the pupils of primary school with the main principles of our work and its significance before showing them our play.
But we wanted to explain them not in conversation way as it may be too hard to understand, but in easy one that would be clear for young children. So, that’s why we decided to arrange an exhibition of children’s drawings on the theme how they understand the importance of environmental protection. Fortunately, children perceived this action with a great interest and excitement. And in a couple of days we got many pictures which, in truth, shocked us. There were so brilliant ideas shown on the drawings that we were amused with how young children can so clearly understand Earth’s problems. All pictures were great and interesting in their composition, but there was one drawing among others that impressed us the most. The idea of it was so close to the main theme of our program that we decided to use it as our logo. As a result, there was much more profit from our action then we could only imagine .We not only acquainted children with environmental problems but also arranged cognitive exhibition for the whole school and got a creative logo.

Earth Hour
It has been generally established that WWF launched an international program "Turn off the light, turn on the music" devoted to the Earth Hour. There is a safe assumption that The Earth Hour is a clear indication of that the world is willing to create a strait course in order to rule out of the terrible complication, which is creeping upon us at the moment- global warming. It is said that it has been the most colossal public demonstration in dealing with environmental problems that has ever taken place.Despite it was the first time Ukraine has taken part in this program, we honored this day in an appropriate way. The event was held on 29 of march in the Botanical garden in Kyiv .There was a share to switch off the light for an hour to show our indifference and to set up a tradition of storing energy. After that the event was followed by the performance of our local band "Kruchitka Caches".
Conclusively saying we appreciated this program a lot and looking forward to take part and support such shares in the nearest future.

Theatre Performance in the Museum of Water during the International Water Day on March 22
About World Water Day
The international observance of World Water Day is an initiative that grew out of the 1992 United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED) in Rio de Janeiro.
The United Nations General Assembly designated 22 March of each year as the World Day for Water by adopting a resolution.
In 2009, the focus of World Water Day on March 22 was on transboundary waters: sharing water, sharing opportunities.
The world’s 263 transboundary lake and river basins include the territory of 145 countries and cover nearly half of the Earth’s land surface. Great reservoirs of freshwater also move silently below our borders in underground aquifers.
With every country seeking to satisfy its water needs from limited water resources, some foresee a future filled with conflict. But history shows that cooperation, not conflict, is the most common response to transboundary water management issues.
Over the last 60 years there have been more than 200 international water agreements and only 37 cases of reported violence between states over water. We need to continue to nurture the opportunities for cooperation that transboundary water management can provide.
We share the responsibility for managing the world’s transboundary waters for current and future generations.
(Information is taken from: http://www.unwater.org/worldwat...flashindex.html )
Our role
This Water Day we decided to present our theater performance “We are not indifferent – Environmental Footprint" in the Water Informational Center – Museum of Water.
Our performance was inside the Museum in very thematic showroom related to the water cycle in the nature. The beginning of our performance was announced by three thunderclaps like in real natural theatre . We hope that many people who visited out event enjoyed it and we tried to inspire them to care about water and save it. And we very much enjoyed the audience, atmosphere and the excursion provided for us in the Water Center. There are a lot of very interesting information, interactive and entertaining exhibits, like model of water cycle in the city – water supply pipes and sewage system, soap bubbles, live fishes, underground world and many other very cool things. Please also enjoy our photos!!!
And we invite everybody to the Water Museum!!! If you are in Kiev please don’t forget to visit!!!

Project 1: Act on climate awareness – “Climate Action Day in Ukraine’
Climate change is not a priority issue in Ukraine. The level of awareness about climate challenge is very low among all sectors of the society and there is a lack of government will to implant environmental policy in decision making processes. Generally, people are ignorant of the impact that their everyday life has on the climate and are therefore reluctant to take personal responsibility for changing their behaviour and attitudes to the environment.
Aim of this project was to improve overall awareness of climate change issues in Ukraine by changing the perceptions, attitudes and habits of young people in Ukraine, leading to a potential reduction in carbon emissions and to a change of state policy. To achieve this goal we were involved in organising the first Climate Action Day in Ukraine. This included public activities such as demonstrations, eco performances, exhibitions and competitions, to inform the public and mass media about climate challenge and encourage people to take personal action to decrease their carbon emissions.
Our partners:
WWF’s European tour ”Climate Change. Time to Act now!” http://www.panda.org/uk/campaig...p_ukr/index.cfm
International project of the British Council Ukraine “Challenge Europe” http://challengeeurope.british...l.org/index.php ?option=com_content&task=view&id=44&Itemid=40
On 23 November 2008, our team helped to organise the first “Climate Action Day” in Kyiv with the aim of raising awareness about climate change issues.
The day started with a march down Andriivsky to say “no” to climate change. Some people were dressed in polar bear costumes, participated bearing banners proclaiming “Wanted stable climate” and “The climate is changing, let’s join the efforts to save our planet”.
At the final destination point the group was met by partners from World Wildlife Foundation and National Environmental Centre of Ukraine, presenting information exhibition on climate challenge, alternative sources of energy and disseminating information leaflets to visitors.
The main attraction of the “Climate Action Day” were ice sculptures of the Earth, a polar bear and a penguin. The sculptures were slowly melting, symbolising how vulnerable our world is.
We put our handprints in support of a poster “We require urgent actions to stop climate change. Ukraine, enough of promises! It’s time to act!”
The poster was to be taken to Poznan, where government delegations from 187 countries were to meet in early December for the UN’s annual climate change summit to debate global greenhouse gases emissions cuts.
The Climate Action Day visitors were also showed a flash mob, quest and a disco - all dedicated to environmental challenges.
Over 1000 people took part in the actions to save the climate that were widely featured on TV, radio and in the newspapers. After a successful first year, it is hoped that “Climate Action Day” will now become an annual tradition in Ukraine.

Project 2: Young Master Program
As a project 2 our team has been participating in the international educational program the Young Masters Programme on Sustainable Development (YMP) at the International Institute for Industrial Environmental Economics (IIIEE) at Lund University since October 2008.
http://www.iiiee-ymp.org/drupal /
The Young Masters Programme is a web-based, interactive distance-learning course that focuses on issues related to sustainable development and preventive environmental strategies.
The Young Masters Programme is divided into four parts.
Part 1 consists of eight weeks of studies with the overarching heading “Sustainability – Why?”
Part 2 deals with preventive environmental strategies and is called “Sustainability – How?”. It consists of ten modules. Each module is estimated to take two to five hours of studies.
Part 3, Project Work, is voluntary but necessary to participate in for the fulfillment of the Young Masters Programme. Here the participants develop a project that applies the learned concepts to real, local situations. The project period is about two months. Instructions and themes for the project work can be presented to the participants when they have passed Part 1.
All projects will be evaluated by a jury and may be eligible for participation in Part 4 – the Global Environmental Youth Convention (GEYC), which is held on a recurrent basis. The next Convention will be in 2009, in Beijing, China. The GEYC is a great opportunity for the students and their teachers to get together and share their experiences and results of their projects and activities.
We have completed already Part 1 and now are working on the Part 2
Part 1 contained the following educational modules:
PART 1: ABOUT SUSTAINABILITY
ModuleTitle
1Hanna and Sustainability
2What is Nature?
3It’s time to talk about Ecology!
4What is Biodiversity?
5What are the Environmental Challenges?
6What are the Social Challenges?
7What are the Economic Challenges?
8The plan ahead
Brief description of the modules is provided below.
Introduction to Module 1
This module “Hanna and Sustainability” challenges us to understand why it matters that we are concerned about the environment as well as society, and that we actually play an important role in making our world a better place to live in. The presentation gave us an idea of how our everyday life is associated with environmental problems and impacts. It illustrates how simple things like taking a shower can add to environmental problems such as global warming, acidification, and eutrophication. However, it also illustrates how we, ourselves, may help reduce the environmental impacts from different activities.
Introduction to Module 2
This week we learnt to understand why we should care about the environment in the first place. What is it we are trying to save? What is nature and why do we need to take good care of it? Are we humans part of nature?
Introduction to Module 3
This week we continued to learn more about how individual organisms in Nature interact with each other and with their environments. We saw how closely linked (or interconnected) everything is in the ecological systems (or ecosystems) we find in Nature, and realize that if we change one thing, many other things will be affected as well.
Introduction to Module 4
Why is this something we should care about? Well, if we damage or destroy these ecosystems, and kill the organisms living there, we do ourselves a great disfavor — we “bite the hand that feeds us”. The value of preserving species and ecosystems is discussed in the presentation on
“Biodiversity”.
Introduction to Module 5
This week we got into a lot of problems! Now that we have reflected about Nature, how it works and why it is important that we preserve it, we looked into what major environmental problems that we and the 6 billion other people on Earth are creating. This first act of the horror show is given in the presentation “What are the Environmental Challenges”.
Introduction to Module 6
So far we have been looking at a lot of the environmental problems. However, there are many social problems and challenges as well. The social issues are in focus when we now look at human rights, population growth, health, and poverty.
Introduction to Module 7
So far we have been looking at a lot of the environmental problems. However, there are many social problems and challenges as well. The social issues are in focus when we now look at human rights, population growth, health, and poverty.
Introduction to Module 8
The issues we dealt with during the last weeks were filled with problems and challenges. Now we started to look ahead into the future, and approach the question of how we should live, progress and develop so that we, the people of today, as well as future generations, can live
a good life in balance with our environment. We first got acquainted with the concept of Sustainable Development (although we have actually been working with these issues for the last three modules) and then learn about what the large, worldwide plans are to solve the problems we have been studying.
We continue studying other modules in the Part 2 and wish to welcome other schools to participate in the next batch of the Young Masters Programme on Sustainable Development (YMP) that will start FROM MARCH 24 TO APRIL 24, 2009.
If you are a teacher or student interested in participating in the Young Masters Programme you are welcome to register in the program
You can find more information about the programme at "how to get started" on the left side-bar on this webpage - http://www.iiiee-ymp.org/drupal /

Anna Siomka
It has been generally established that there have always been people responsible for the enlightening of others, making them familiar with the questions of evolution. I believe that there came a stage when people no longer regard the prohibition of fighting against global problems as a kind of advertisement. It is a save assumption that there came a time for us to be acquainted with the real nature of disaster which is facing us at the moment and younger generation is here to settle this complicated matter.
***
The evidence of our indifference to the environmental changes is our participation in various ecological projects; our participation in Young Masters Programme can be regarded as a vivid example of it. We were resourceful enough to depict our imagination in the self-staged performance We are not indifferent. We know how to act.
My name is Ann Siomka and I have several roles in this performance. At first I was an author and the main purpose was to introduce our performance and to make the spectators to be aware of the term ecological foot print. In fact it means humans influence on the Earth, to say it in another words a print which is left on the Earth by the person. Scientists discovered that humans influence reduces the ability of Earth to renew on 20%. The consequences of it is a rapid disappearing of endangered species and tones of rubbish left . Then I was a trader of water and advertised my product on the fair.
To make the conclusion, having staged this performance initiated us to go on working in the field of making people aware of the solutions to the global problems available.
Ksenia Kuleshova - A batteries'-trader
My name is Ksenia Kuleshova. I played a role of batteries'-trader in our performance 'We are not indifferent, or ecological Footprint". During the play we developed a theme of hard ecological situation, which was formed in the world. We are not indifferent to this, so that is why we are trying to explain how it is important to economize the nature resources, to recycle harmful for the environment remains of human's activity. I tried to convince the audience that it is really significant to recycle the batteries! I had a small part, but to my mind it is rather essential. Run out batteries decay in the ground and harmful substances contaminate into it. This can cause horrible consequences. I was not the only "trader" in this play. All "traders" had bright advertisement of products, which they represented. This helped us to bring up our idea to the audience.
So, to sum up, this performance made me more thoughtful about the environmental problems and the ways of changing this tragic situation.
Marina Levchenkova
My name is Marina Levchenkova and I take part in our performance 'We are
not indifferent - environmental Footprint" as a Civilization. My role is one
of the most important as my character personify the main moral of our play
that we are not indifferent to the problems of our society and we are
capable of solving them.
Civilization is a human society, which during a period of time have stable
features in social and political organization, economy and culture: science,
technology, art, common spiritual interests and ideas.
My character is wise and she realizes that all nowadays environmental
problems appeared because of quick human development. And she admits her
false, but she is not principal anymore. Today, everything depends on human.
The only thing that civilization can do is to appeal to people to stop
damaging the nature and surroundings.
Kapetiy Anna
My name is Kapetiy Anna and I perform as water in a play. My personage is represented as one of the most essential elements on the Earth, which is in a great danger due to people's influence. Despite the well-known fact that mankind has no capacity to survive without water, people do not treat Water properly, because they consider it as a routine or a part of their everyday life that will be in existence forever. But nowadays this faulty myth about the endlessness and inexhaustibility of the water resources is vanished. So Water tries to increase people's awareness concerning this issue. Also, three little Water Drops, who accompany Water, deliver charming poems about the significance of the careful treatment of water.
I take part in a play as a cotton clothes' seller too. My personage advertises cotton clothes, but he is not concerned about the harmful impacts of the cotton. It is understandable for trader that several materials including cotton can be rotted and, as a result there can be no sign of it at all. But children’s labour is used on the cotton fields, so the production of his product should be controlled too.
Ksusha Zinchenko
My name is Ksusha Zinchenko, I play in the performance, which is named “We are not indifferent or Ecological Footprint”. I`m very proud of the significance of my role, as I am the Earth. The chief aim of my character is to enlighten people of the real situation on our planet, especially by showing my helplessness and inability to cope with ecological problems, caused by people only. Could you realize, that people, the inhabitants of the planet, are the only thinking creatures in the universe! The history of the mankind surprises by its perfectness; I feel a great responsibility for every thing, that takes place on me, because every living creature is necessary and indispensable part of the Earth, as a biological system. But unfortunately, at the moment, my fate depends on those clever creatures.
I`ve used some facts from the book “Living Planet report” to make my words more astonishing and informative for people, who partly realize the damage of their impact and the importance of their responsibility of the planet.
So, the members of our team are not indifferent and we know how to start
Katia Nikulina and Oleksiy Oleynikow
Our names Katia Nikulina and Oleksiy Oleynikow. In our performance we play the most necessary roles "Today" and Tomorrow . It is the background of our play. Our meeting is the beginning of the performance. In some places we are the linking chain of different ivents and we analyze the actions of two young representatives of Ukraine. All in all we help to convey the idea that the future life of our earth depends on today s actions of all people. To survive and stay to live in safe future is that problem which must be solved by all of us with help of education.
That's why our team will show our performance "We are not Indifferent or Ecological Footprint" to all pupils of our school. (We have already agreed it with our principal Mr. Victor Vaculenco, than we have been invited to show it in the Water Information Centre to celebrate the World's Day of Water on March 22. and even the students of famous Kiev-Mohila Academy invited us to celebrate the Earth Day together with. We are happy to be needed in our community! =)
Dasha Plodenko
My name is Dasha Plodenko and I perform as a white bear in a play We are not indifferent or The Ecological Footprint . Nowadays white bears are becoming endangered species, so I try to show the public that people must not be indifferent. People must care about the wild animals and the wild nature, as in a few years instead of our beautiful green planet we would be able to see just a polluted grey colourless world. We wouldn t also be able to breathe fresh air any more, as we would be breathing only dust into our lungs. Nowadays there is also a problem of deforestation and a problem of soil polluting, on which the trees and plants are growing. Because of the polluted soil , trees can t grow and as a result there is no place for birds and animals to live, as the forests are disappearing headlong and in the nearest future it would be a serious problem not only for the animals, but also for all the mankind. Another important problem is the dangerous oil emissions into the seas and oceans, as they not only pollute the water, but also deprives floated birds of food. Moreover it can bring serious injures to them. I appeal to the mankind to save the white bears, wild animals and all the plants. We want to save the nature and to make the world safe for everyone!
Tatiana Ivashenko
Hello! My name is Tatiana Ivashenko and I play a role of modern Ukrainian girl, called Odarochka, who is representative in our up-to-date life. In pair with me plays Sviatoslav Baranov, he plays a role of Ukrainian boy, called Grice. We are not regardless to the future of our planet. We are interrupted with the global problems of our surroundings. During the hole play raises different questions such as variety of global problems. It is very important to think over these questions nowadays because in the future it can contribute to undesired consequences. And our purpose is to improve this idea.
My name is Inna Yermachenko.
I play a role of white bear.I tried to show that white bears need our help and i sang the song about ecological problems and about global warming. This problems are very important nowadays and we are to help our planet and our nature in order to eliminate further disasters. With the help of my words I want to express that global warming is a reason for extinction of white bears and we must save them and other animals. Their habitats need our help because we depend on them and they just diserve it.
Hello. My name is Sviatoslav Baranov and I took part in the play which touched upon the ecological problems, which are the things of the first importance to speak about nowadays. I’ve played the leading role of simple Ukrainian contemporary teenage Gryts’. At the beginning of the play my character is not aware of ecological problems and takes it like a trifle thing. But with the flow of events Gryts’ understands the whole importance of reducing the influence of the “ecological footprint” and tells the audience about awful facts concerning “Earth’ health conditions”. I have to say that I was deeply impressed with these facts and after the first rehearsals I began to think about myself: what I can do to save the environment? For example, I never knew before that there’s so little water left on the Earth, and by 2020 to provide the exceeding population with it, people will need 17 percent more than they will possess. Also my character gives some pieces of advice to others: how to reduce the amount of household garbage, how to cut on electricity and water usage, etc. Of course, some of my classmates were also involved in this project and we’ve really done colossal work and after the performance I had really euphoric feeling! Everyone was playing marvelous and looks like we coped with the main aim – to amuse the audience and to convince them that we’re really not indifferent to the main topic of the play – “ecological footprint”. I believe our work was appreciated and I hope that’s not the last time we’ve performed together, because I really like to be a part of such collective, which deals with important social work, connected with ecology
Our performance was made to encourage people to take action in solving ecological problems of our planet...
And we decided to create a performance for more entertaining and clear way to be understood.
