FIRST REPORT
Hello everyone!

This is our first report which will present an insight into what have we been doing in our project. As we returned from Illmitz, we encountered the Apple day celebration at out school, and so we came up with an idea of connecting it with our project in some way. Since we have an ambition of presenting the importance of reducing our own environmental footprint to the students of our school, including apples in all that seemed like a pretty good idea.
We formed a team which mainly consists of first-grade students, and several older students from journalism group. While talking to two biology teachers at our school, and during the first team meeting, we came up with an idea that our project should explore the old, indigenous apple varieties and show that consumption of these apples can reduce our impact on the environmental footprint. We also came up with the name for our project: GRANNY’S APPLES AND THE ENVIRONMENTAL FOOTPRINT.

Here is a report of our work in November.

At school, we immediately spread the word that we are collecting the old apple varieties, and asked all students see if they can find such apple varieties at home and bring one example of each variety to school, along with the name of the variety.
At our meeting on Saturday 7th 11th we met with the topic of the environmental footprint and talked about the problem. We also played a game GLOBAL CAKE.
We named, photographed and sorted the collected varieties of apples and made a plan of activities through which we'll explore old apple varieties. We have divided tasks by the end of semester.

Here are our activities
8th November 2009.
A part of our team visited the Apple Day exhibition in a nearby village of St. Martin and connect with some of the apple producers in Međimurje, Fruit alliance of Međimurje and Mr. Petar Vuković, a great connoisseur of the old apple sorts, from whom they have learned a lot of information for their research and also have completed their list of old species.
21st November 2009.

•Meeting of the team in which biology teachers Žaklin Lukša, Monika Podvezanec and geography teacher Marija Vuk also participate - further steps of the project are agreed upon
•Around ten students have gone to the centre of Čakovec with 2 basic tasks:
- to explore offer and examine the price of apples, suppliers and demand at the city's marketplace

- to do a survey: offer the town citizens the old and new sort of apple and examine which would they choose, why, and do they know old apple varieties and try to make them conscious that way.

25th November 2009.

•Activity in our school during the big break: Which apple is more delicious?
- We have cut the old and new varieties in slices and offered them to students and teachers to taste and choose which slice is tastier. We asked them what they think, which one is the old variety, do they even know what the old varieties are, and which old varieties exist in Međimurje.

We are still processing results of the survey and also preparing a poster about them which we will display at our school. We also have started with other activities and preparing for our traditional humanitarian action in the school - Goodness Fair. However, we'll tell you all about that in our next report.

Until then, we wish you successful completion of all the school duties!
