School event "Save our homeplace clean"
December, 10,2009
(by Svitlana Saichina ,Alla Rudkovskaya ,Svitlana Dotsenko  and the pupils  of junior school)

  The goal of  it  was  to encourage  young people and all the participants  to build  up their mind  and to see their possibilities to contribute  to a socially and environmentally friendly planet Earth.
 At this event young people spoke about protection of the environment and   tried to solve the problem as  if they  are scientists, doctors ,authority , a plant, an animal and just young  people .
 The important thing was that their parents helped them in their work  and at the end of the event  the pupils with their parents spoke about the aims of  their  further  project  work .
 Of course, we invited  our local TV presenters “ KRUG” to  involve more people in our project ideas.
And we succeeded  ! Of course , we have lots of photos of  the event

Brainstorming lesson:"Healthy food restaurant"
” HEALTHY FOOD RESTAURANT “-was the first  brainstorming  lesson we started  with the pupils of the 6th form  by Antonina Kotenko .

The problem was that there has been a marked increase in eating out over the last years . Fast food is very popular particularly among young people with burger bars being responsible for16% and  pizzerias  for 12% of total catering sales . So , my students designed  not only their  healthy menu of food and drinks , but also their healthy food restaurants with vegetarian food. They proved  the advantages of their ideas for the health an nature.
The aim of the method was to reflect  the  person’s  own  needs , to rise awareness considering the global environmental as well asocial problems and to create a setting for productive discussions  . The participants should  find  their own  orientation and build up their own opinions .

2010 is the year of biodiversity
“ 2010  IS THE YEAR OF BIODIVERSITY “ – it  was the topic for  some brainstorming ideas  at  the  lessons  in the 6th class  by Antonina Kotenko :

- the  most  beautiful place of our country (city) ;
-the  ideal  place for me to live  ;
-endangered  species  in  my  country  ;
-the Danube  ,as an international basin;

At these lessons we spoke about beautiful places we have visited and liked a lot , We discussed  how  we can protect them and make better . Some pupils designed  a machine to protect  their place from flooding , other –from  different  gases , they drew  an imaginary  eco-clean  island to live there and to save rare plants and animals , all  endangered  species .

Speaking about  the river  Danube , we highlighted  that it is most  international river basin – 10 countries share  the river ,4 European  capitals , 80 million people live in the basin , 20million people depend on its  drinking water . It is a unique home for biodiversity : 50 Protected areas of international importance  2  UNESCO biosphere reserves and world  heritage sites , 100 species .  Danube delta  is an ecological hot spot  : it’s world’s largest reed bed ,320 bird  species  are of European  importance .
There are 3 major  threats  to the Danube and its people :  pollution , lots of habitants and  climate change .
So , first  my pupils tried to learn and remember the species  of this place .We used Danube box cards  with the species  to play with, the map ,some pictures of the area. Then my pupils brainstormed  the  sentences :
-How  to help  our nature if you  are just a pupil ,
-If you are a grown up ,
-If you are very rich,
-If you are our local  authority ?
The aim of it was that the participants  should  reflect  their  thoughts , mental states in the face of the current  global trends . Some participants may have doubts and worries concerning the current future, some of them may have optimistic view of the future .

Seminar:"RESEARCH WORK BY OUR SCHOOL "
( The seminar for the staff of our school  by Inna Krylova  and her colleagues)
At this seminar  we discussed some problems we had researched in  different ways of our work :
-excursions ,
-expeditions,
-science experiences at our science lessons ,
-brainstorming ideas  etc.
Every  group of teachers  in their project  spoke about the things they are worried with in every day life : plastic bags ,that are not recycled properly ,some toys that are harmful for kid’s life , different gases and litter ...
The teachers proved that with the help of their research  work  they teach the pupils  to understand good and bad sides of our lifestyle ,
that our  environment is closely connected with our health and  life ,
that we could reduce  much  more the pollution if we were not so  careless

Intellectual show :"Spring is coming! Let's help our nature"
. INTELLECTUAL SHOW : ” SPRING IS COMING ! LET’S HELP  OUR NATURE ! “for the pupils  of the 6th and 7th classes by  Liubov  Gritsenko and Olga Musiyenko.

To realise  this project the following  methods were used:

- first our teachers and pupils  collected a lot of information about ecological problems  of our place . The main of them  was the pollution of our Black Sea and its coast ;
-the  photo exhibition of  local plants :
-an action at the beach :” The Black Sea is in danger “
-spreading leaflets  :“Save our beaches clean ! ”
-research expedition along our Black  Sea coast
-finally there was an intellectual game with some provocative statements:
a different world is possible;
it makes sense that people care about their ecological footprint ;
it makes sense to get active ;
the future of the world .

The aim of the project  is again an awareness rising for the nature ,creating    personal  emotions ,motivation to change something , realisation that there are plenty of ways for  showing action ,also on the individual level . To face all the negative global trends we have to see possibilities to deal with them . The seed all change is percipience and the process of getting active starts with  comprehension

Some brainstorming ideas at our lesson
“ IF I RULED THE WORLD ... “ -  an essay for the pupils  of the 8th class
by Antonina   Kotenko  .

We started our lesson with the poem ;

What have they done ? Look  at the Earth !
Rivers  are gone , oceans are  lost .
What   have  they done ? So cruel deeds
They killed all plants, dead our fields .
What  have   they done ? Look at all these !
Animals ‘  lives  completely missed !
What will they do  killing   all days  ,
Being so cruel , using  all ways !
Dearest  earth  ! Stop their crimes !
I love you so , you are my life !

YOU ARE MY PEACE ,YOU ARE MY HOME !
DEAREST  EARTH ! I LOVE YOU SO !

Then  we spoke about different  disasters : forest  fire ,flooding , hurricanes, earthquakes   and  brainstormed the ideas for what  would my pupils do if they were the council in their town , they had been warned that a natural disaster is about to happen  ,they  needed to plan a response , it was up to them to protect  the inhabitants of their  town .
The pupils spoke about communication, mass media , transport , different ways of warning and helping people .
We also discussed the ideas  how to stop global warming and  help the environment   These are some  interesting ideas from the essays :
-if we plant more trees , there will be less CO2 in the atmosphere ;
-if we recycle our rubbish, we won’t produce so much pollution ;
-if we don’t drive every where in cars we won’t burn so much oil;
-the environment would be cleaner if we grew our own vegetables and fruit , if everyone didn’t  throw  litter ,
-if we used our own bags for shopping ,
-if we gave up smoking ....
A lot of my pupils would prevent  poverty , famine , homelessness , disease if they ruled  the world ...

The aim of this creative method is  to find ideas how to set abstract goals into concrete individual actions . It is also important , that the pupils don’t feel pressure to act  or stressed  , to realise their actions .

EARTH HOUR
( by  Antonina Kotenko  and the pupils of the 6th class )

We prepared posters  about  Earth Hour  and  challenging  information  beforehand for  everyone to choose where  and  how  to participate in the action .
Some pupils decided  to switch off the light  on the 27th of March  at 20.30 and play the guitar  and  sing songs , some – offered  to  play violin , word games  or just walk with  friends or  families .
The aim of this action is to make everybody think about  our environment  and understand  , that  global warming is everybody’s  business  , when we are together  we  can improve our  environment  and  our  future life.

Project description

1.General Project description from November 2009  to  January 2010
(max. 3.000 characters):
So , inspired by our seminars in Illimitz ,we came to our home city.
Of course , we knew that our project  should be special and unique ,NOT routine.
       Being determined to motivate everyone to do our best , we highlighted five  phases  in our project : finding ideas ,project planning ,implementation phase ,evaluation and closing phase .
I’d like to tell you about each phase .

FINDING  IDEAS :

1.PRESENTATION TALK  ABOUT THE PROJECT “ SCHOOLS FOR               EUROPE’S ENVIRONMENT AND NATURE “
November , 27 , 2009 )
(by Antonina Kotenko and Marina Kustova , school assembly holl)

 There were about  20 people ( school authority , teachers  and a group of pupils )
 The main target of it  was : to inform the audience about  the trip , to encourage and motivate  them for  individual actions.
  First, we showed a presentation  film about the seminars in Illimitz ,then we highlighted  the topic Ecological Footprint and discussed the personal position: where I am , in which direction the world moves…
  I should say , we enjoyed the discussion and even forgot  about  our mobiles .
   At this meeting  we also chose the project team ( 8 teachers and 7 pupils )  .

 PROJECT PLANNING  PHASE :

2.PLANNING OF OUR WORK WITH THE MAIN PROJECT GROUP
  November ,25 ,2009 )
( by Antonina Kotenko and Marina Kustova )

The  next meeting  was after quarantine .Everyone was already  with its project ideas ! So we only discussed the terms , main goals , place and organisation  of the events and actions .
We also , took photos of  the leaders in the project  group .

IMPLEMENTATION PHASE :

3.SCHOOL EVENT “ SAVE OUR HOME PLACE CLEAN “

Of course , we have lots of photos of  the event.

4.LOCAL EVENT: “HELP OUR HOMELESS FRIENDS “
  December,20,2009
(by Natalya Poznyakova and the pupils of the 9th -10th class)

  One more interesting action was :”Help our  homeless friends. “
The goal of it is to help our homeless animals. So  with  the help of our  pupils ,their  parents , teachers and local authority we were  able  to organize a shelter  for homeless dogs and cats, now our  pupils  are taking care of them . They are , also, preparing to take part in the international forum of  “ Good deeds “ .
There are also  a  lot of  interesting  photos !

5. SCHOOL EXCURSION : ” OUR NATURE IS BEAUTIFUL ! TAKE          CARE OF IT ! “
January ,2010.
(by Helen Migunova and the pupils of the 8th class )

 The aim of it was to let everyone feel and understand the nature better , be closer to it ,take care of it .

6.EXHIBITION OF PHOTOS AND ARTWORKS OF JUNIOR PUPILS:
  “WORLD IS STUNNING”

To face all the negative global trends we have to see possibilities to deal with them . The seed all change is percipience and the process of getting active starts with  comprehension  .

6. “ IF I RULED THE WORLD ... “ -  an essay for the pupils  of the 8th class
by Antonina   Kotenko  .

We started our lesson with the poem ;

-if we plant more trees , there will be less CO2 in the atmosphere ;
-if we recycle our rubbish, we won’t produce so much pollution ;
-if we don’t drive every where in cars we won’t burn so much oil;

7. “ EARTH  HOUR “ – SCHOOL ACTION .

April :

8. SPRING RESEARCH WORK WITH  HERBARIUM .

Do you think that some things have changed in school, in school-class, ….
(e. g. environmental attitudes, habits or structures in school, …) caused by your project ? Please try to figure out the most important changes:

-the  pupils showed the diversity of opinions , their thoughts and attitude towards  global trends ; most of them have an optimistic view of the future and they have some good ideas how to help our environment  ;

-taking part  in  all  the  project  actions pupils and parents, teachers and local authority showed their determination and readiness  to help our nature in team;

-we  started a great international project  : ”Help our homeless friends “,in which the pupils not only  take care of the animals , but  protect our environment  from  infectious diseases ;

.
Did you celebrate already  the end of your project together with your students?
We would like to read a bit about it 

Yes , it  was on the 17th of April – The Day of Environment .

All  the staff of our local schools and senior pupils took part in the flash – mob action “

Clean hearts –clean Earth “ . We cleaned our park , beach, school territory..

After that we were resting  in our classes drinking tea, discussing  our further  plans

and  watching the photos .
2. Recommendations

Imagine that another teacher would like to do a similar project as you did – what would you recommend?

What was good, what could have been better, did you have difficulties? Please describe them and how you were able to overcome these obstacles.

-        First ,I would recommend to choose a creative and helpful team;
-       then think carefully about four phases of the project;
-         finally, follow the SMART principle ;

5. Evaluation

Please help us to evaluate our work:

Can you give us suggestions for improvements in the project?

I think everything was organized brilliantly.
Thank you for being helpful !
It was a great pleasure to work  with you !

Did you feel well supervised during the last months?
What was good, what could have been better – what would be your wishes concerning supervision if you had the possibility to do it a second time?

Everything was good and interesting , but the only problem was  that we were short of time , because of our quarantine , holidays and rather cold winter .

Did you use the weblog? Was it easy or difficult and why?
What type of exchange and sharing information with other teachers and schools would you recommend?

For  me , it was more usual to exchange and share the information with other teachers and schools  with the help of e-mail  or telephone .

Thank you very much for your documentation. Please send it to danica.bauer@wwf.at  by 20th of April 2010 at the latest!
