European schools for a living planet
Petöfi Sandor
The school was founded in 1892. The building we use now was constructed in 1900, in the most picturesque part of Buda, between Castle Hill and Taban park. Originally it was a four-storey building but the fourth floor was destroyed in WW II.  The school is located on a busy main street of Budapest but from the windows we can enjoy sites of Buda Castle from one side and the park on the other.

In 1946 the school was named after Petőfi Sándor – the most famous Hungarian poet.  Until 1963 it was an all-boys school, but nowadays it’s a general co-educational school (Gimnázium) with about 420 students, aged between 14 and 18, from Budapest and the suburbs.
Our school has recently started special preparatory classes for students aged 14. This special course includes a large number of foreign language, IT and project-work lessons, and provides an excellent opportunity for the students to be involved in more depth with environmental project work while studying English.
This year in September we involved our students in a project called “A Sentimental Map of Budapest” in the local area, where students identified and mapped environmentally significant objects and sights.
