Even more than Romania the Slovak Republic is dominated by the Carpathians. All the northern part of the country is mountainous. The highest peaks are formed by the Tatra mountains near the Polish border. The Carpathians show a high biodiversity in alpine plants and animal species which are very similar to vegetation and life forms in the Alps. The Danube forms part of the border between the Slovak Republic and Hungary.
Bratislava with 1,16 million cityzens is the capital of the country. Vienna, the Austrian capital, and Bratislava are now often named as “twin cities” due to their close geographical situation and familiar business relations which have grown since the iron curtain was abolished.
